The Yarn Bowl

Pinned ImageThe other day as I was waiting for the big disappointment known as the 2012 Superbowl, I decided to finally get started on a project that I have been wanting to try.  I first saw this on, you guessed it, Pinterest.  I actually saw this version

I like it a lot so I have really wanted to try it out.  I didn't want to go the paper mache route I tried it with Mod Podge.  All I can say is I will probably be trying this again, using the paper mache method.  I decided to use some multi colored yarn I had purchased last Halloween ( I was trying to make a lion costume...it didn't go well)

I did use the same idea of using a mixing bowl and wrapping saran wrap around it.  I also put some saran wrap down on my table to try and keep the mess to a minimum.

First I put some Mod Podge on the saran wrapped bowl, mistake #1.

Then I started to coil the yarn around the bowl.

After completing the coiling, I put a layer of Mod Podge on the top of the yarn.  This was tricky since the yarn didn't want to stay in place and moved around a little bit.

I let the bowl sit overnight to dry and this was the result.
after lifting off the bowl i used as a mold

I found that since I had put the Mod Podge on the saran wrap I can't peel it off.  But I sort of liked the way the saran wrap looked like ice or glass when the light shone through.

light would really help this effect

As you can tell by the horrible lighting I took these last photos right before going to bed.  I was exhausted, sad, disappointed, and many other emotions from the Patriots losing the Superbowl.  Oh well, maybe next year.  I am going to try this again using the paper mache method that I first saw.  I am going to use something to color the paper mache glue tho because I don't want white.  That was the only thing I did not like about the original.

***Update***

This little guy didn't do so well while I was at work.  Oh well, maybe more yarn would do the trick?
